Featured Lake Mead Sites
Historic Wrecks, Deep Sites, and Local Training Dives
These are some of the Lake Mead sites divers may encounter through advanced training, technical diving, local charters, or guided dive planning.
Technical Dive Site
PBY-5A Catalina
The PBY-5A Catalina flying boat rests in two major sections in Lake Mead’s Boulder Basin. Originally built as a World War II-era patrol bomber, this aircraft had been converted for civilian use before its 1949 accident during a water landing attempt.
At roughly 130 feet, this is a dive for qualified technical divers with the right training, equipment, and planning.

Wreck Diving
Wreck Alley
Located near Sentinel Island, Wreck Alley includes a variety of submerged boats and structures. With depths ranging from recreational profiles to deeper technical ranges, the site can offer different experiences depending on training level and dive plan.
Hoover Dam History
Aggregate Piles & Train Hopper
The Aggregate Classification Plant helped support Hoover Dam construction in the 1930s. Today, its underwater remains spread across a large area of Lake Mead and create one of the area’s most interesting historic dive sites.
Advanced & Technical
Purgatory
Purgatory is located on the north side of Black Canyon and is known as a deeper dive site. It is better suited for experienced divers who are comfortable with depth, planning, and local conditions.
Local Practice Dives
Shore Diving
Lake Mead and nearby Lake Mohave also offer shore diving opportunities. Sites like Placer Cove and Cabinsite can be useful for local practice, skill refreshers, and getting more comfortable in desert lake conditions.

Training Note
Not Every Lake Mead Site Is for Every Diver
Some Lake Mead sites are appropriate for newer divers. Others require advanced, deep, or technical training.
Las Vegas Scuba Academy can help you understand which sites fit your current certification level and what training may be needed before attempting deeper or more complex dives.
